Safety Education & Training

As a sailor you are totally and wholly responsible for the safety of your yacht and crew.

This cannot be delegated to anyone else.

You are the skipper and you must ensure that you use your boat safely, for your own and your crew's sake. Therefore it is important to access as much safety training as you can.

As a club we cannot provide you with safety training. What we can do to assist is to point you to possible sources of sailing education. These sources are not exhaustive. It is your responsibility to arrange for your own training in boat safety and safe boat handling.

From time to time we are approached by accredited instructors to run courses, to which our members are invited to participate. These courses are announced to our members from time to time. On an annual basis the BTYC has been conducting some basic safety training for members such as VHF radio License courses, Marine Pyrothecnics use/practice and basic boat handling. Members are encouraged to contribute to these demonstrations and to attend to share or sharpen their own skill. On this page we will include links to sites that have educational elements for sailors. Mast Raising - Single Handed

Raising the mast is perhaps one of the more risky health and safety issues when preparing the boat to launch and sail. The risk gets greater as we get older, but should not be underestimated at any age. It is a potentially dangerous procedure that can cause serious injury, if things go wrong. I and many others have given a lot of thought to mast raising. I copied and studied many methods and, with the help of many, including Ian Clapperton, Dave Morrissey, Gary Prescott and others, came up with my own system. Below you will find some single-handed mast raising systems that may suit you or at least give you ideas about how to make your mast raising procedure a little safer.
